2.1HowFaxesFlowThroughtheSystem
2.1.1Queues
There are four important queues in NET SatisFAXtion. Any fax that is processed by the server is
stored in one or more queues. The fax servers queues should stay relatively empty. If the queues  
growinsizeovertime,itcanbeananindicationthatsomethingismisconfigured.
Scheduled Queue: This queue stores outbound faxes waiting to be sent. Faxes that are converting,
faxes that failed and are waiting to retry, and faxes that are scheduled to send in the future will
waithere.
ActiveQueue:Thisqueuecontainsallfaxesthatareactivelysendingorreceiving.
Outbox (Sent Queue): Delivery notifications are stored here before they are delivered to the
sender. Some clients (notably FAXability) will only collect notifications when the user specifically
checks. All other clients will retrieve notifications in real time and nothing should be left here
longerthanafewseconds.
Inbox (Received Queue): Received faxes are stored here before they are delivered to the
receiver. Unrouted faxes (delivered to Postmaster) will remain here until manually routed. Some
clients (notably FAXability) will not retrieve faxes in real time since the client application is not
runningallthetime.
2.1.2OutboundFaxes
A fax is sent to the fax server from a client. NET SatisFAXtion validates the phone number. The
fax server places the call using a configured fax device. When the fax completes, a status
notificationissentbacktotheclient.
2.1.3InboundFaxes
A call comes in from a configured fax device. NET SatisFAXtion answers the call and begins
receiving the fax. Once the fax is completely received, the fax server makes a decision where to
send it based on fax server configuration. If the fax server is set to auto routing, the fax is
deliveredittotheclientimmediately,elsethefaxwillsitintheinboxuntilmanuallyrouted.
2.2FaxDevices
The term “fax device” refers to the means by which the NET SatisFAXtion fax server sends or receives
faxes from other fax machines or fax servers. Fax devices can be a traditional PCI fax card, an onsite
VoiceoverIPmediagateway,orevenaSIPproviderusedovertheopenInternet.
The ReDetect Fax Devices’ utility allows you to add/remove fax devices as well as change the number of
ports allocated to each device. The total number of ports that can be configured is controlled by your
product key. The fax service will be stopped by ReDetect Fax Devices utility before any changes can be
made.Theservicewillberestartedwhenchangesarecompleted.
The Change Server Settings’ utility allows you to modify settings on existing ports. Click the Hardware
